Program Information

Campbell County’s Trash for Cash Program is a fundraising opportunity for non-profit organizations based in Campbell County. Beginning April 1 each year, groups are assigned a program slot on a first come, first serve-basis. Applications are accepted until all available slots are filled.

Upon acceptance into the program, the Solid Waste Coordinator will assign your group a clean-up date based on the preferences listed in your application. Each group can perform a clean-up of up to 10 lane miles (5 miles, both sides of the road) at $100 per mile. Each group leader is responsible for turning in all liability waivers prior to the group’s assigned clean-up date.

Groups that share the same tax EIN (Employer Identification Number) are limited to a total of two clean-ups, or up to $2,000 per year. If there are more than two interested groups per tax EIN, the groups will have to collaborate and split the funds. Example: "School A" baseball team and "School A" basketball team can each be eligible for a 10 mile clean-up at $100/mile, but if “School A” soccer team also applies, all three teams must work together and split the $2,000.

Trash Laws/Illegal Burning

In Kentucky, it is never legal to burn household trash other than uncoated paper products. Aerosol cans, plastic, tires, food waste, coated wire, motor oil, painted or treated lumber, and many other materials create toxic fumes and ash that are hazardous to human health and the environment. Children, the elderly and those with existing health problems are particularly vulnerable to smoke from open burning. To learn before you burn, or to report an illegal open burn, call Diana Davidson at 502-782-6592 with the Division for Air Quality, or e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. Household Hazardous Waste

The Northern Kentucky Household Hazardous Waste Action Coalition hosts a FREE Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event each fall for residents of Boone, Campbell, and Kenton and Counties. Please click here for more information.

Certain household products contain hazardous chemicals. Generally, a substance is considered hazardous if it can catch fire, react or explode when mixed with other substances, or is corrosive or toxic. Have some hazardous substances terminology:

Corrosive- a chemical, or its vapors, that can cause deterioration or irreversible alteration in body tissues at the site of contact, and deteriorate or wear away the surface of a material.

Flammable- can be ignited under almost all temperature conditions.

Irritant- causes soreness or inflammation of the skin, eyes, mucous membranes or respiratory system. Household hazardous products and their containers need to be properly disposed to minimize potential contamination of groundwater supplies. Kentucky’s groundwater serves as the drinking water resource for 85 percent of the state's rural population.

Toxic - may cause injury or death upon ingestion, absorption or inhalation The best disposal method for products is to use it as intended on the label. Be sure to use up the product or find someone who can!

Disposal of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) in Landfills:
To protect groundwater resources, Kentucky enacted stringent design standards for all contained landfills operating after July 1, 1995. Designs include impermeable clay liners, leachate collection systems and groundwater monitoring systems. Since all operating landfills meet these stringent standards, household hazardous waste can be disposed with other household garbage. However, household hazardous waste products should be recycled whenever possible and some wastes require special handling before disposal. If you cannot use up the material, please click the link below for the Northern Kentucky Solid Waste Resource Guide.

Paint Disposal
Paint is not a hazardous material. If dry, paint can be placed with your normal trash collection. To dry your paint, use an absorbent, such as sawdust, cat litter, or paint crystals.
Step 1: Stir in absorbent. Place in a safe area with the lid off, as drying takes several days.
Step 2: Stir once per day until dry.
Step 3: Place with your normal trash, with the lid off.
