Drivers passing through and residents of Newport are starting to see construction work beginning on the northern component of the KY-9/AA Highway expansion project in the city. According to KYTC District 6, this is an $8.7 million project that will improve and enhance regional connectivity. Campbell County Fiscal Court also anticipates this project will attract additional investment and increase economic activity in Newport's west side.
The full KY-9 project is split into three phases, and phase one-the new alignment between 12th and 9th Streets-is still in progress and is expected to be completed this fall. Now phase two will reconstruct traffic from 5th Street to the Taylor Southgate Bridge and includes two roundabouts by the 4th Street Bridge, as well as the Taylor Southgate Bridge. Phase three will tie these first two pieces together and is expected to begin construction in 2017.
