Alexandria Burn Ban
Wednesday, 29 September 2010 15:09
Alexandria has issued a burn ban. More information on this can be found here.A burn ban has been issued
Tuesday, 28 September 2010 13:06
Campbell County has joined Kenton and Boone Counties in ordering burn bans effective immediately. Campbell County Judge/Executive Steve Pendery has issued the emergency declaration prohibiting "all outdoor burning" in the county until the further notice. He cites the lack of adequate rainfall as a contributing factor in the fire danger.
William R. Turner, Director of the Campbell County Office of Emergency Management explained that the burn ban was issued following consultation with the fire chiefs from across Campbell County.
Also today, Kenton and Boone Counties imposed a burn ban. Under the Executive Order issued by the County Judge Executives burning is prohibited county-wide until sufficient rainfall has occurred. Residents of Campbell County are advised not to burn trash, grass or crops and not to light campfires or set bonfires. The following exceptions apply to the ban on outdoor burning; Fires lit in a grill for the purpose of food preparation. Bonfires or ceremonial campfires of no more than five feet by five feet in size may be conducted by organized and recognized community, charitable or religious groups provided the local fire department is notified. Such fire shall be set in an area at least 50 feet from any adjacent structure or wooded area. The fire shall consist of clean wood only and shall not be used for disposal of solid waste. The fire shall be monitored at all times by members of the group with means of extinguishment such as a charged garden hose or buckets of water readily available until the fire is completely extinguished.
Failing to comply with the burn ban could lead to fines and other civil action depending on what type of property is damaged during a fire. The Campbell County burn ban will continue until the area receives significant rain, Turner said. The area is approximately 6 inches below normal rainfall.
Preparedness Month
Tuesday, 28 September 2010 12:56
Alexandria, KY — September 27, 2010 — Every day, the Campbell County Office of Emergency Management works diligently with communities to make their families safer by learning to prepare for disasters before they strike. There is one part of the family, however, that is often neglected when making disaster preparations: your pets.
William R. Turner, Director of the Campbell County Office of Emergency Management said today “These family members are wholly dependent on you to keep them safe from harm. The Emergency Management Agency joins the Humane Society of the United States in urging pet owners to include their pets in their disaster preparedness plans.”
When preparing your Family Evacuation Plan, be sure to make arrangements for a safe place to take your pet. If you have to evacuate, it is important that you evacuate your pet too CC leaving them behind is too dangerous. Because of public health regulations, pets are not allowed in Red Cross shelters. Before disaster strikes, pet owners should identify places that can shelter pets by working with local veterinarians and the Humane Society. Also, while preparing a Disaster Supplies Kit for your family, pet owners should include essential supplies for their animals, including pet food, bowls and a manual can opener, water, medication and records CC all of which can be stored with the rest of the family==s emergency supplies.
American Red Cross disaster shelters cannot accept pets because of states' health and safety regulations and other considerations. Service animals who assist people with disabilities are the only animals allowed in Red Cross shelters. It may be difficult, if not impossible, to find shelter for your animals in the midst of a disaster, so plan ahead. Do not wait until disaster strikes to do your research.
Contact hotels and motels outside your immediate area to check policies on accepting pets and restrictions on number, size, and species. Ask if "no pet" policies could be waived in an emergency. Keep a list of "pet friendly" places, including phone numbers, with other disaster information and supplies. If you have notice of an impending disaster, call ahead for reservations.
Ask friends, relatives, or others outside the affected area whether they could shelter your animals. If you have more than one pet, they may be more comfortable if kept together, but be prepared to house them separately.
Prepare a list of boarding facilities and veterinarians who could shelter animals in an emergency; include 24-hour phone numbers.
Ask local animal shelters if they provide emergency shelter or foster care for pets in a disaster. Animal shelters may be overburdened caring for the animals they already have as well as those displaced by a disaster, so this should be your last resort.
Have a Portable Pet Disaster Supplies Kit at the ready. Whether you are away from home for a day or a week, you'll need essential supplies. Keep items in an accessible place and store them in sturdy containers that can be carried easily (duffle bags, covered trash containers, etc.). Your pet disaster supplies kit should include:
Medications and medical records (stored in a waterproof container) and a first aid kit.
Sturdy leashes, harnesses, and/or carriers to transport pets safely and ensure that your animals can't escape.
Current photos of your pets in case they get lost.
Food, potable water, bowls, cat litter/pan, and can opener.
Information on feeding schedules, medical conditions, behavior problems, and the name and number of your veterinarian in case you have to foster or board your pets.
