Change your Clock - Change your Battery

Wednesday, 03 November 2010 13:46

Alexandria, KY — November 2, 2010  —  We all know that Smoke Alarms (Detectors) can save lives when operating properly. There are many types, however most smoke alarms are battery operated or have battery backup features. It is important to test your alarms each month to assure that they are in working order.

We also need to be sure the battery has adequate power to operate the alarm. Smoke alarms have a monitoring system for the battery and start chirping when the battery is low. All of this sounds great and fool proof, however several lives were lost due to non-working smoke alarms. Many were found without batteries in them. The Reason? Maybe someone took the battery for a game or radio, or removed the battery to stop the chirping or maybe they were going to replace it and forgot. Because of these findings the program "Change Your Clock - Change Your Battery" was developed. If everyone follows this program they should never be subject to a non-working smoke detector due to a missing or weak battery. The Action is simple and we are reminded each year at Daylight savings time. In the spring (March) we move our clocks ahead one hour and in fall (November) we move them back one hour. William Ray Turner, director of the Campbell County Office of Emergency Management urges you, each time you do this to change the battery in all the smoke alarms as well.

Turner also said AIf a specific battery type is recommended then that=s the one to use and whether one is recommended or not, always be sure you are purchasing a fresh battery@. Turner went on to note that those available at a garage sale or flea market may be old stock. Always check the dates on the  battery. Turner also stressed that the life of a smoke detector is 10 years. If your detector is 10 years old or older, it should be replaced. Remember, properly working smoke alarms can save lives.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Alexandria, KY — November 1, 2010  —  With the chill of fall expected to arrive this week it’s time to think about our home heating systems. The heating system in a home is the prime cause of fires in residences and is the second most common cause of deaths because of fires, according to nationwide research.

William Ray Turner, Director of the Campbell County Office of Emergency Management explains that common sense steps can do much to avoid the risks of fire in the home.

Here are some precautions that Turner offers:

* Check the central heating system early every season, even before turning on the heat, if possible.

* Change or clean air filters regularly, every month of the prime heating system if you can.

* Wood or coal‑burning stoves should be at least a yard away from walls or furniture. Heating devices should be installed by carefully following all directions, and checked for cracks or other problems periodically.

* Do not fill kerosene heaters indoors, and never while the heater is in operation. Again, follow the directions carefully, step by step.

* Have an emergency escape plan ‑‑ which can help in situations other than fires ‑‑ and actually hold a home fire emergency drill each heating season.

* Have a prearranged place for your family group to assemble after leaving the building. Lives are lost every year by persons attempting to rescue family members who are merely lost because in the confusion of the immediate aftermath of a home fire.

Emergency Management officials suggest, if you need further information, that you contact the fire department nearest your home.
