Shake Out

Friday, 18 January 2013 11:18

At 10:15 a.m. on Feb. 7, 2012, millions of people in the Central United States will seek shelter under their desks, kitchen tables and other sturdy objects as part of the second annual "Great Central U.S. ShakeOut" earthquake drill. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) is encouraging people to register for the multi-state drill. Nearly 22,000 Illinois residents have registered to date.

"The drill takes just a few minutes, but the lessons learned can save countless lives," said IEMA Director Jonathon Monken. "Many people don't realize that the most powerful earthquakes to ever occur in the U.S. took place 200 years ago along the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which reaches into southern Illinois. That risk, along with the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone in southeastern Illinois and numerous other faults throughout the state, is why we're encouraging residents to take part in the ShakeOut drill."

Monken said schools, businesses, government agencies, families and others are encouraged to register to participate in the drill at http://www.shakeout.org/centralus. Registered participants will receive additional information about the drill and earthquake preparedness.

More than three million people in 11 states participated in the first "Great Central U.S. ShakeOut" on April 28, 2011, including nearly 260,000 participants in Illinois. The drill focuses on the "Drop, Cover and Hold On" protective actions people should take when an earthquake begins: "Drop" down to the floor, take "Cover" under a sturdy desk, table or other furniture, and "Hold On" to the furniture item and be prepared to move with it until the shaking stops.

The date for the 2012 ShakeOut drill coincides with the 200th anniversary of the Feb. 7, 1812, earthquake near New Madrid, Missouri, the last of a series of earthquakes that were felt as far away as the East Coast. The event is being organized by the Central United States Earthquake Consortium (CUSEC) and its member states of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee.

Additional information about the earthquake risk in Illinois and steps to take before, during and after an earthquake is available at http://www.Ready.Illinois.govwww.Ready.Illinois.gov.

Earthquake Awareness Month

Friday, 18 January 2013 10:20

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has proclaimed February as Earthquake Awareness Month in Kentucky as local, state and federal officials continue to prepare for The Great Central U.S. ShakeOut Earthquake Drill, scheduled for February 7, 2013.

The 2013 Great Central U.S. ShakeOut is expected to involve more than 2 million people through a broad‐based outreach program, partnerships with the media and public advocacy. This event is being organized by the Central United States Earthquake Consortium (CUSEC) which includes the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma and Tennessee. The ShakeOut will be centered around a simultaneous Drop, Cover and Hold On earthquake preparedness drill that will be held at 10:15 a.m. Central Time on February 7, 2013. Drop, Cover and Hold On is the easy‐to remember and recommended personal protective action to take in the event of an earthquake.

February 7th is also the 201st anniversary of the last of the 1811‐12 earthquakes that destroyed the town of New Madrid, Missouri and created Reelfoot Lake in northwest Tennessee.

Scientists, experts and emergency management officials are aware earthquakes similar to, if not greater than, those that struck in 1811 - 12 could hit Kentucky anywhere, at any time, and are taking steps to educate and prepare Kentuckians, and others alike.

“Interested participants are encouraged to go to http://www.shakeout.org/centralus and pledge their family, school, business or organization’s participation in the drill. Registered participants will receive information on how to plan their drill and how to create dialogue with others about earthquake preparedness” said William R. Turner, director of the Campbell County Office of Emergency Management.

“Unlike the weather, earthquakes cannot be predicted,” said John Heltzel, director of Kentucky Emergency Management. “An earthquake similar to those experienced in 1811 - 12 would be catastrophic today and that is why we should take time now to educate ourselves and practice this drill in order to better protect ourselves and lessen that impact.”

Interested participants are encouraged to go to http://www.shakeout.org/centralus and pledge their family, school, business or organization’s participation in the drill. Registered participants will receive information on how to plan their drill and how to create dialogue with others about earthquake preparedness.

The Drop, Cover and Hold On drill is a two minute commitment for something that can save your life. It all begins with registering, which is free and open to everyone.

Individuals and their families can take the following steps to prepare for earthquakes:

  • Know and practice the Drop, Cover and Hold On drill
  • Get an emergency supply kit
  • Make a family communications plan
  • Stay informed of the risks in your community
  • Check for hazards in the home
  • Identify safe places indoors and outdoors
  • Educate yourself and family members

Last year more than 2.4 million people participated in the ShakeOut Drill with 430,00 registered from Kentucky.

For more information on the ShakeOut and to register visit http://www.shakeout.org/centralus or http://www.kyem.ky.gov/programs/Pages/Earthquake. Both websites offer useful resources and a short video demonstrating the Drop, Cover and Hold On drill. Information on this year’s KYEM Earthquake Awareness Contests where students can compete to win an iPad or eReader is also on the KYEM website.

Holiday Safety 2012

Wednesday, 19 December 2012 16:04

The Director of the Campbell County Office of Emergency Management says "the Right Gift Can Make the Holidays and the Coming New Year More Disaster-Resistant".

Fruitcake is passé, buying another tie seems uncreative and the Beanie Baby collection is already too big. So what's a holiday gift giver to do? William R. Turner, Director of the Campbell County Office of Emergency Management said today "The holidays are a perfect time to think disaster preparedness - specifically, preparing for and reducing risk from winter storms, tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, and the like."

Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans must deal with natural disasters that harm family members, damage property and destroy communities. Thinking ahead and being prepared can do much to reduce or prevent the tremendous heartache and financial hardship of these disasters. In truth, many Americans simply don't have some of the basic items they need to face a disaster or large emergency. While not your traditional gifts, these items can make a huge difference in the year ahead - while also showing how much you care.

"While the Campbell County Office of Emergency Management is not in the retail business, we are in the business of helping people prepare for disasters, and to reduce their risk," said Director Turner. "These suggested gifts will do just that. They're a wonderful way of making 2013 a more disaster-resistant year for everyone."

Suggested disaster-ready gifts include:

  • A smoke detector with extra batteries
  • Household fire extinguishers for kitchen and all bedrooms (5 pound, A-B-C type)
  • A foldable ladder for evacuation of a second story in a fire
  • A heavy duty flashlight with extra batteries and a battery-powered lamp
  • A first aid kit
  • A battery-powered radio with extra batteries
  • A NOAA Weather Radio with a battery backup and tone-alert feature to receive weather and other emergency alerts
  • A sturdy plastic tub filled with bottled water and non-perishable, high energy food and canned goods
  • A camp stove or canned heat stove, with extra fuel
  • A year-long policy for Flood Insurance, available from your insurance agent and backed by Federal Emergency Management Agency
  • A winter car kit that includes emergency flares, shovel, windshield scraper, battery-powered radio, flashlight, water, snacks, tow chain or rope, tire chains and fluorescent distress flag
  • The gift of a saw or axe to cut back combustible plants and vegetation from around a wildfire-vulnerable house
  • Supplies for a pet disaster kit, including food, bottled water, leashes, toys, plastic dish and carrying case or crate
  • A year's subscription to an on-line service so as to have access to the Campbell County Emergency Management website at http://www.campbellcountyky.org/home/services/public-safety/emergency-management.html or FEMA's Web site at http://www.fema.gov/ and the FEMA for Kids Web site at http://www.fema.gov/kids/

"We want Campbell Countians to not only have a safe and happy holiday season but a safe and prosperous 2013" Turner said.
