The Campbell County Office of Emergency Management will be hosting a meeting for those organizations interested in forming a Campbell County Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD). "In the tornado's of March 2012 the importance of our non-profit and faith based organizations were highlighted in the response to meet the needs of our own Campbell County citizens and our neighbours in surrounding counties, even in eastern Kentucky" said William Turner, Director of the Campbell County Office of Emergency Management.
Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) are non-profit, nonpartisan, membership based organization that serves as the forum where organizations share knowledge and resources throughout the disaster cycle-preparation, response and recovery -to help disaster survivors and their communities.
To fulfil this mission, Local VOAD's foster more effective service to people affected by disaster through convening mechanisms, outreach, advocacy, and as a champion and facilitator for the application of our values and core principles.
More information on VOAD can be found at the National VOAD website: http://www.nvoad.org/
Turner said, "We would like to meet with local (Campbell County) non-profits and faith based groups to discuss our next steps in forming our own VOAD." Outdoor Siren Reminder
Thursday, 18 April 2013 13:06
The Campbell County Office of Emergency Management provides and maintains OUTDOOR warning siren systems in Campbell County. These systems are designed to provide an audible alert for persons that are just that -Outdoors. The system is not designed to provide an audible alert for those persons indoors. The function of the siren is to alert residents to TAKE SHELTER, go indoors and turn on the TV or radio to become informed. It's also important to remember to tune into local radio and TV stations. Most likely CNN or MSNBC will not tell you what's occurring in Campbell County.
The function of the siren is to alert residents to TAKE SHELTER and/or go indoors and turn on the radio and/or TV to become informed. Major uses of the outdoor warning sirens within Campbell County are under the following conditions:
- The issuance of a tornado WARNING by the National Weather Service (NWS)
- A chemical emergency in progress
- An impending enemy attack
The outdoor warning sirens are tested on the first Wednesday of each month, at 12:00 noon. The tests are not conducted when there is the possibility of severe weather on that day.
To ensure that you receive the most timely and current severe weather information, utilize a tone alerting weather radio that will receive severe weather watches and warnings broadcast directly from the National Weather Service (NWS) over their NOAA weather radio broadcast system. To best protect you, indoor warning tone alerting weather radios augment the outdoor emergency sirens to give you an integrated indoor and outdoor warning system.
Campbell County will be only activated for weather emergencies when a TORNADO WARNING - is issued by the National Weather Service or a funnel cloud is seen by local public safety officials. When there is a threat of a tornado in Campbell County, the outdoor sirens will sound a tone for five (5) minutes. Seek safe shelter when severe weather threatens. Turn on the TV and radio for emergency information. Have available a battery operated radio and a tone alerting weather radio.
It is also entirely possible that one community may have its outdoor warning sirens activated while another may not. Due to the geography of Campbell County events in the northern and southern most parts of the county may not affect both areas.
In the event of an ENEMY NUCLEAR ATTACK OR HAZARDOUS MATERIALS EMERGENCIES - the outdoor warning sirens will sound a tone for five (5) minutes. Turn on TV and radio for emergency information. Seek immediate protection from radioactive fallout in the best available shelter, preferably a basement location. Have available a battery operated radio.
Outdoor warning sirens are not used to give an "ALL CLEAR" signal. This information can be obtained from TV and radio. Repeated sounding of the sirens indicates additional warnings are being issued.
Lastly, DO NOT call 911 to inquire why the sirens are going off.
